This Small Space
April 2005
Art Gallery of Bancroft
Bancroft, Ontario, Canada
Artist’s Statement
this small space between the dining and living room where my easel
and paint box sit –
this small space between Jake’s wake time and wake time when I inhabit
this small space –
this small space between edge and edge of canvas where marks are placed
–
this small space when our cheeks touch while we look at the marks placed
on this small space,
in this small space

A is for Ambika, goddess of an ancient age, assisting Asian
women as a motherly sage.
B is for butterfly at the bountiful bouquet, resting before the flutterby buffet. C is for cow, contentedly chewing, then calling her calf by quietly mooing. D is for diamonds, dandy and fine, delightfully dangling in a design. E is for ear, entertained by the show, enthralled by echoes of e-i-e-i-o. F is for fruit on faded floral fabric, favoured since Eden for flavour fantastic. G is for George, grandfather thrice great, painting with gusto; his gift: to create H is for Harlequin, a humorous mime, his diamond attire a hallmark through time. I is for Ifa, from Africa of late, imparting insight into individual’s fate. J is for Jacob, a gem and a joy, born in June, a jewel of a boy. K is for knitting, a kaleidoscope of colours, keenly enjoyed by mothers and others. click here for more |
