Artist’s Statement
this small space between the dining and living room where my easel and paint box sit –
this small space between Jake’s wake time and wake time when I inhabit this small space –
this small space between edge and edge of canvas where marks are placed –
this small space when our cheeks touch while we look at the marks placed on this small space,
in this small space

Li'l Yellow Cat Earns a Crown
Images by Rose Pearson
Words by Darrell Dobson

Far beyond the end of the world,
In a place where wishing sometimes still helps, Li'l Yellow Cat said,

“Mama, I want a crown.”

“Oh,” his Mama answered, “A crown must be earned –everyday.”

“Where will I find one?”

“You must look for it inside and outside.”

L’il Yellow Cat began searching for a crown.
He crossed the water.
He met a moose and learned the secrets of the moon.
He met two love birds and learned to sing.
He met a tiger and learned to gnash his teeth.

He met a lion
who kept things in order and cared for others.
Li’l Yellow Cat came across a sleeping bunny and stayed to protect her.
Li’l Yellow Cat realized he had been travelling for quite some time.
He made friends with a giraffe, a quiet fellow who only talked at night.
A crocagator crept toward the sleeping bunny, and L’il Yellow Cat gnashed his teeth to defend her.
He gathered together the bunny, giraffe, and crocagator under the secrets of the moon and taught them to sing.
L’il Yellow Cat had earned a crown.
As Yellow Cat headed off
to that which comes next, he remembered
his mother’s words,

“A crown must be earned – everyday.”

And there was something else
– he knew that he could.
