Jacob’s Alphabet

A is for Ambika, goddess of an ancient age, assisting Asian women as a motherly sage. 

B is for butterfly at the bountiful bouquet, resting before the flutterby buffet. 

C is for cow, contentedly chewing, then calling her calf by quietly mooing. 

D is for diamonds, dandy and fine, delightfully dangling in a design. 

E is for ear, entertained by the show, enthralled by echoes of e-i-e-i-o. 

F is for fruit on faded floral fabric, favoured since Eden for flavour fantastic. 

G is for George, grandfather thrice great, painting with gusto; his gift: to create. 

H is for Harlequin, a humorous mime, his diamond attire a hallmark through time. 

I is for Ifa, from Africa of late, imparting insight into individual’s fate. 

J is for Jacob, a gem and a joy, born in June, a jewel of a boy. 

K is for knitting, a kaleidoscope of colours, keenly enjoyed by mothers and others. 

L is for lion, larger than life, looking lonely and longing for love from a wife. 

M is for moose in a magical mansion, making music by moonlight in a mystical fashion. 

N is for Nanabush, the native trickster rabbit, notoriously naughty with his shape-shifting habit 

O is for oak leaf, on an ocean of green, overlaying an ode from an old poet’s dream. 

P is for pussycat under the covers, Pablo Picatso pondering plovers. 

Q is for quatrefoil, a quaternary ornament, each element rotated a quarter turn per quadrant. 

R is for rabbit, renewed from his roam, recalling the reason he needs to go home. 

S is for Saskatchewan, the lily its flower, sweetens the prairie after a shower. 

T is for teapot, an old tarnished treasure, steeping at teatime an afternoon pleasure. 

U is for Unicorn with an unassuming look, unconcerned by his unveiling here in this book. 

V is for vase with a verdigris veneer, a valuable venue for violets each year. 

W is for writing, lines by Walt Whitman, wonderful words by this poet are written. 

X is for xylographs, prints made from woodblocks, a technique existing long before Xerox 

Y is for yoga performed in a yurt, then yearning for yesterday’s yummy yoghurt 

Z is for zebra with a zest for living, zeroing in on a great zeal for giving.
